Techniques for Teaching Students with Different Disabilities
Visual
Impairment

When
addressing a person with visual impairment in class, say his or
her name.

Give
copies of overheads and board work to those with low vision.

Spell
out proper names if the spelling doesnt follow conventions.

Ensure
that mandatory readings are on audiotape. This can be done by
the staff at the Centre for Special Services.

Permit
students to audiotape the lectures.
Hearing

Use
visual aids e.g. acetates and slides.

In
large classrooms use a microphone.

Dont
talk to the chalkboard. A person who speech reads cant see
your lips.

Permit
different exam formats e.g. a tape for dictation.

Ensure
that the classes are held in accessible buildings, including the
re-scheduled ones.
