Teaching Techniques for Teaching Students with Different Disabilities

Visual Impairment

  • When addressing a person with visual impairment in class, say his or her name.
  • Give copies of overheads and board work to those with low vision.
  • Spell out proper names if the spelling doesn’t follow conventions.
  • Ensure that mandatory readings are on audiotape. This can be done by the staff at the Centre for Special Services.
  • Permit students to audiotape the lectures.

Hearing Impairment

  • Use visual aids e.g. acetates and slides.
  • In large classrooms use a microphone.
  • Don’t talk to the chalkboard. A person who speech reads can’t see your lips.
  • Permit different exam formats e.g. a tape for dictation.

Physical Disability

  • Ensure that the classes are held in accessible buildings, including the re-scheduled ones.
  • See the last three suggestions for Visual Impairment.
  • Write an agenda on the chalkboard or overhead projector.
  • Clearly state and demonstrate any pattern of specific procedures (e.g. for some labs).

Chronic Medical Problems

  • Permit a student extra time for assignments and/or exams.
